Straw Glider

Children make a simple glider using straws and paper loops. When thrown, the glider flies through the air—teaching basic aerodynamics and encouraging exploration.

Materials :
  • Straw
  • Paper
  • Tape

Challenges:

  1. First, we'll give the kids a sheet of paper and a straw and ask them to make something that flies.
  2. Then, we'll ask them to make different shapes, not just circles, and see what happens.
  3. They can add wings or tails to their designs and use more than one straw to make gliders.
  4. We can also try using different shapes of paper all in one model to see what changes.

Questions to be asked:

  1. Which shape do you think makes something fly the best?
  2. What happens if we use the same size shapes in a glider?
  3. Why do we use one bigger and one smaller shape?
  4. What other things could we use instead of a straw for the glider? Could a stick work?
  5. What do you think is more important for flight, the straw or the paper?
