Straw Glider
Children make a simple glider using straws and paper loops. When thrown, the glider flies through the air—teaching basic aerodynamics and encouraging exploration.
Materials :
- Straw
- Paper
- Tape
Challenges:
- First, we'll give the kids a sheet of paper and a straw and ask them to make something that flies.
- Then, we'll ask them to make different shapes, not just circles, and see what happens.
- They can add wings or tails to their designs and use more than one straw to make gliders.
- We can also try using different shapes of paper all in one model to see what changes.
Questions to be asked:
- Which shape do you think makes something fly the best?
- What happens if we use the same size shapes in a glider?
- Why do we use one bigger and one smaller shape?
- What other things could we use instead of a straw for the glider? Could a stick work?
- What do you think is more important for flight, the straw or the paper?
