how to play

Divide the children into small groups of 2–3. Begin with a story, such as villagers needing a bridge that can open and close to let boats pass underneath or explorers crossing a river safely, to spark imagination. Provide each group with cardboard or paper for the bridge, strings, and simple pulley wheels. Explain that their challenge is to create a bridge that can be lifted and lowered using the pulley system. Encourage them to experiment with string placement, pulley positions, and bridge balance to ensure smooth movement. If children face difficulties, give hints such as: How can you attach the string to lift the bridge evenly? What happens if one side is heavier than the other? Allow enough time for building, testing, and adjusting, helping children learn about mechanical advantage, balance, and problem-solving through hands-on play.

Challanges

  1. Create a bridge that can open from either side or both sides using a pulley system.
  2. The cardboard must be balanced while pulling the thread to ensure smooth movement.
  3. The bridge must not collapse or fold when tilted to open or close.

Questions to be asked

  1. How does the thread help the platform move to open and close?
The thread pulls the platform up when tightened and lowers it when released, working like a pulley system.
  2. What happens when the thread isn't tight enough?
If the thread is loose, the platform may not lift properly or stay in place.
  3. Why should the cardboard used as a bridge be flat and strong?
A flat and strong cardboard bridge ensures stability and prevents bending or breaking under weight.
  4. How can we make sure the bridge is stable enough when we pull the thread?
We can secure the bridge by using strong cardboard, tying the thread properly, and fixing the base firmly.
