how to play

Divide the children into small groups of 2–3. Begin with a story, such as helping a magical garden bloom with spinning colorful pinwheels or creating decorations for a festival, to spark imagination. Provide each group with paper, a straw, and tape. Guide them to fold and assemble the pinwheel so it can spin freely on the straw when blown by air. Encourage experimentation with different sizes, colors, and folding styles to see how it affects spinning. If children struggle, give hints such as: How tightly should the paper be folded? Which way should the blades be folded to catch the air? Allow time for each child to make, spin, and enjoy their pinwheel, helping them explore motion, creativity, and basic physics in a fun hands-on way.

Challanges

  1. Make your own design of pinwheels.
  2. Can you make the pinwheel with less or more than 4 blades? Does it work better?

Questions to be asked

  1. What makes the pinwheel spin?
  2. What happens when you make the blades shorter or longer?
  3. Can the pinwheel work without the air?
